A nearly 50-year-old organization steps into a new chapter. SafeHaven of Tarrant County rebranded as The Archway. The nonprofit works with domestic violence survivors but was often known only as a shelter, as implied by the name SafeHaven.

The CEO and president of The Archway say the new name reflects where the agency is headed.

"Shelters are still there and available, but a few months ago, we launched a huge nationwide research study. We are offering expert witness testimony. We offer our fatality review team. We work with offenders. We work with prevention. And we really did outgrow the name SafeHaven of Tarrant County," Kathryn Jacob, DSW, told NBC 5.

Jacob says the name The Archway, the logo of an arch, and the tagline, "The way beyond violence," better encapsulate all the work the nonprofit does.

"The strongest piece of architectural design that you can have is an archway. So we love that strength, that grit, that is really our Tarrant County roots, but it's also implied a lot of movement. So we talk about how the experience of a survivor starts with safety, starts with walking through that archway, but then there's so much beyond that, that we want to offer that we want to see them grow and thrive in," Jacob said.

Jacob says the mission to protect survivors, the crisis hotline (1-877-701-7233), the programs and services all remain.

The Archway operates Tarrant County’s only two emergency domestic violence shelters for survivors and their children. Last year, the organization fielded 13,903 calls to its 24/7 crisis hotline and provided emergency shelter to 1,615 women and children in Tarrant County.

The announcement of the name change coincides with Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October.
